I am currently finishing my BSDH . Will that be all I need to get into a teaching position?
It depends on what type of institution you are interested in applying to. Technically, in order for faculty to teach didactically (in the classroom) they need to have a degree that is one step higher than the degree being awarded. So if the program you apply to awards an Associate degree – with your bachelor’s degree you would be able to teach both clinically and didactically. However, if you applied to a dental hygiene program that awards a bachelor’s degree –then you would only be able to teach clinically. With that said – a survey was conducted several years ago asking dental hygiene program directors what qualifications they looked for when hiring faculty. At that time, the majority indicated that they desired applicants with graduate degrees. So kudos to you for completing your BSDH!! And hopefully, as you enter academia you will consider going on for that master’s degree 😉
