I admire our fellow colleagues who have done amazing things with their careers. I’d like to volunteer but don’t know how to get started. Any suggestions?

In my opinion, the best way to get involved as a volunteer within our profession of dental hygiene is to join your local dental hygiene association. Because we have a tripartite system with membership, the involvement at the local level also immediately involves the new member on the state (constituent) and national level as well. It is so easy to be involved on a limited basis or a more in-depth basis depending on the amount of time you wish to contribute. Our local groups put on health fairs, visit nursing homes, go into the schools to teach dental health care and we assist in public health dental programs as they present themselves. On a growth track, committee positions as well as officer positions are made available nearly every year for new members to become more involved. Each time the new member will be mentored by those who have previously been involved. It’s fun for us to mentor those new members who will be the future of our profession and we look forward to making new friends as well as welcoming these individuals into our amazing professional organization.
