Mentor Advice ForumCategory: QuestionsHow to get into academia or research?

Working in an oral surgery office, I have come to enjoy pharmacology, physiology, and interdisciplinary communication. Thus, I would like to further my education but am unsure of where to direct my studies. I believe I would like to eventually go into academia or research. Any advice on a PhD focus or how I could translate my interests into career goals?

My PhD degree in Health and Behavioral Sciences (from University of Colorado) was VERY interdisciplinary. It may have a slightly different name at different institutions. The people in my cohort were from a variety of health disciplines. What I enjoyed about the degree is that it encompassed so many sciences—psychology, sociology, biology etc. Maybe a bit heavier on social rather than basic sciences.
