Hello! I am very interested in getting into sales but I’m not exactly sure how to do so. I don’t have very much past sales experience. I have worked in private practice for a little more than 6 months. What would be the first step to obtaining this goal? Thank you!
All of us providing direct patient care are in the sales business whether we realize it or not. We are “selling” our practice to sustain patient loyalty and referrals, we are “selling” health as we discuss the benefits of recommended treatment when patients have no symptoms or motivation to move forward, and we are “selling” our recommendations for daily disease management as we customize oral hygiene regimens for our patients. You do have considerable sales experience if you have been in a private practice any period of time. With that as your backdrop, I would suggest you read a few books: The Ultimate Sales Revolution by Steve Lishansky; The Go-Giver, Expanded Version by Bob Burg and John David Mann; and Secrets of a Master Closer by Mike Kaplan. All three of these books bring a fresh and useful perspective to understanding the world of sales. In addition, I would look into CareerFusion (careerfusion.us) for guidance on moving into sales with a clinical background. All the best to you. Dream big and never give up!
