Mentor Advice ForumClinical Competency
Em asked 1 year ago

Hello,
I am current an MSDH student and I will have to complete a Concentrated Practicum course which consists of field experience to work with a mentor to complete a series of tasks and projects of importance to the dental hygiene site. My practicum is in an education setting and I am having difficulty with coming up with the tasks. I have proposed a remediation program, but the dean stated that the program already has an amazing remediation program that they would not want to change. If you were mentoring a student, what would you suggest they focus on?
Thank you for your time!

I think to get the most out of your field experience you should discuss what goals you have for the field experience with the program. Do you want to learn more about teaching? Do you want to get some accreditation experience? Do you want to know more about the clinical coordinator position? Etc. Then you can ask what types of activities the program could benefit from related to those goals. It would be difficult to come up with ideas without being familiar with the program and you want the experience to be mutually beneficial. I think the answer lies in a conversation with the Dean or program director.
